5 benefits of Thai massage you may not know about

When we think of a massage, most of us picture relaxation and switching off. Thai massage offers that and a great deal more, but its benefits reach well beyond what you feel in the moment. This age-old technique, born at the Wat Pho temple in Bangkok, works on the body in a very different way from Western massage.

At Baan Pho, our Thai massage studio in Girona, we see every day how this practice changes not only the body but the mood of the people who come through the door. Here are five real, well-documented benefits you may not know about.

1. It works the Sen energy lines

Unlike Western massage, which focuses on muscle alone, Thai massage works along what are known as the Sen lines — energy channels that run through the whole body according to traditional Thai medicine. Applying pressure on these points aims to restore energetic balance, in much the same way as the meridians of Chinese medicine.

2. It noticeably improves flexibility

One of the most distinctive features of Thai massage is its assisted stretching, drawn directly from yoga postures. The therapist uses their own body weight, hands, elbows and feet to guide the body through movements that widen joint mobility gradually and safely.

With regular sessions, many clients notice a real improvement in:

«Thai massage does not just relax the body, it settles the mind too. It is the closest thing there is to passive yoga.»

3. It stimulates blood and lymphatic circulation

Rhythmic pressure combined with stretching stimulates blood flow in the areas where tension — and with it, waste — normally gathers. That supports muscle oxygenation and speeds up recovery, which is why so many athletes build Thai massage into their recovery routine.

4. It lowers stress at a deep level

The slow, steady, deliberate rhythm of the session switches on the parasympathetic nervous system — the one responsible for the body's calm and rest response. Unlike acute stress, Thai massage invites the body into a state of deep rest that can last for hours, or even days, after the session.

5. It improves the quality of your sleep

As a direct consequence of lower stress and released muscle tension, many people who have Thai massage regularly report sleeping better that same night. The combination of physical and mental relaxation creates the right conditions for genuinely restorative rest.

How often should you have a Thai massage?

There is no single rule, but as a general guide: if you are after maintenance and prevention, one session every 3–4 weeks is usually enough. If you have an area of chronic tension or you are going through a particularly stressful period, more frequent sessions can make a noticeable difference.

At Baan Pho we offer sessions of 60, 90 and 120 minutes, adapted to what you need at the time. If it is your first time, we recommend 90 minutes so the whole body can be worked without rushing.
